I became a foreign film connoisseur in four weeks.

I took a condensed, upper-division Scandinavian cinema class this summer. It wasn't fun writing papers on films, especially when you're like me and you get caught up in the story more than the cinematography. Anywho, I found out the Danish film industry is a respectable one, behind Hollywood and Bollywood. If you are interested in contemporary film movements, check out some Dogme 95 films like "Celebration (Festen)" or "The King is Alive." One of best films we watched in class was a Swedish film called "Kitchen Stories." It's dry, simple, original and readily available at video stores. A great Danish film (non-Dogme) was "The Green Butchers." This was a surprise, dark comedy about two men who start selling human meat. A couple other really funny and light films were Upswing and Jalla! Jalla!, but they were not distrubuted to the U.S. If you want to feel like a well-rounded foreign film buff, without watching a bunch of artsy-fartsy crap, check out some of these films.
